A minimum of 64 people died in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. Over 80 individuals were detained.

Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using shooting, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body said it was "horrified" by the police operation, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".
