Reports indicate that original actors Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are returning to their iconic characters in the next chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The project is now in the works.

A Significant Comeback for the Franchise

Lawrence and Hutcherson are slated to play Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the characters they made famous. It is believed their appearance will probably be featured in a brief glimpse ahead, as the main film series concluded with their characters married and with children.

This represents the sixth cinematic outing in the global Hunger Games franchise.

Exploring the New Story

Sunrise on the Reaping draws its story from a 2025 novel by author Suzanne Collins. It will be the follow-up prequel after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Returning to the director's chair is Francis Lawrence, who has helmed the majority of the previous films in the series.

The Plot and New Cast

The film's events are set roughly two decades prior to the first Hunger Games, centering on a young Haymitch Abernathy. Haymitch, later known as Katniss's mentor, is shown as a tribute in the brutal 50th Hunger Games.

The cast also includes several notable actors in important characters:

• Jesse Plemons is playing Plutarch Heavensbee.
• Ralph Fiennes is cast as a younger version of the calculating President Snow.

What the Stars Are Doing Now & The Film's Schedule

In other news, Jennifer Lawrence is receiving acclaim for the film Die My Love. Josh Hutcherson stars in the sequel to the hit horror film Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

Regarding the filming timeline:
