Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
Summers remarked in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await following their advancement".
The prominent academic, who previously headed the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The recently released communications showed that Summers corresponded with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it respected his determination to depart.
"We value his many contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," the organization remarked.
Congressional Action
This news arrives after the two houses of Congress voted on Tuesday to approve a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its records on Epstein.
The legislation will afterward proceed to the administration of the White House for approval. The President has stated he plans to sign the bill, after modifying his position on the matter following pushback from his followers.

A batch of Epstein-related emails released by the legislative panel recently mentioned several well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The communications revealed that Summers and Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often trying to connect the academic to prominent world leaders.

After the emails were made available with the general audience, the former official expressed he took "full responsibility for my poor decision to maintain communicating with Mr Epstein".

He led Harvard from five years and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public commitments recently on Monday, he said he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Following Summers' statement on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in DC where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was not associated with the organization.
He entered the board of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive the company leader.
